Ancient History

What was the world like in its youth? What would it be like to live in a society where there were animal sacrifices, prophets, conquerors, and hundreds of gods? This course will examine the ancient world, telling the stories of Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, Hannibal Barca, Jesus Christ, the Emperor Justinian and many others along the way. We will learn throughout this course just how similar, and how different, our world is from the ancient one.

Locations: Menlo Park, San Carlos

Cost: $110/hr.

Recommended hours: 6-13

Goals:

  • Understand the basic narrative of events from 500 BC-500 AD
  • Grasp what it would be like to live in the ancient world
  • Connect the developments of the ancient world to today’s society

Course Description:

This course will strike a balance between biography and history. We will learn the stories of the great individual men and women who shaped history, as well as the societal forces that shaped these great men and women. We will be discussing how our modern ideas of justice, our conception of freedom, and even our standards of beauty, all find their origin in the ancient world.

This course will be highly customized, students will be reading and writing about the stories that most interest them.
