Course Description:

To learn philosophy is to learn how to think. In today’s “knowledge economy” where a student’s ambition is only limited by their ability to absorb, digest, and communicate information, it is especially important for students to be exposed to at least some philosophy. Philosophy is a kind of conceptual “heavy-lifting.” If we build a students philosophical muscles, every other exercise in communication will seem easier and lighter for them.

Nietzsche writes in aphorisms: short, stand-alone sentences or paragraphs, and is thus perfectly suited to introduce students to philosophy. He has an engaging, even mesmerizing style that draws students in, and makes them want to keep reading. We will read hand-picked selections of his texts and connect them to the cultural and political movements that were occurring at the time.
