I grew up in Mountain View and attended Saint Francis High School before braving the blistering cold northern Indiana winters at the University of Notre Dame, where I majored in Pre-Medical Studies and Philosophy.
I have always had an extremely wide variety of interests. In college, I took classes in Calculus, the writings of Homer, Physics, the authenticity of Irish culture, Mandarin Chinese, Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry, among other things. I love learning about anything and everything, and I hope to spread that enthusiasm to students!
After graduating I spent a year in China teaching English to high school students in the Hunan province. In China, I discovered my passion for education and helping students. Seeing the look of triumph on a student’s face when he or she answered a question correctly was enough to keep me upbeat for the rest of the day. Upon returning to the United States, I knew that I wanted to continue teaching and tutoring.
While teaching in the classroom, I learned that every student has his or her own unique style of learning. Generally, it is said that some students are auditory learners, some are visual learners, and some are tactile learners, but I believe that even these categories are too broad. Each student has a truly individual learning style, so I try to take a personalized teaching approach with each of them. One-on-one interactions provide great opportunities to gear lessons toward each student’s particular learning method.
In my free time, I play basketball, read, run, and eat uncomfortable amounts of food. I also enjoy watching the Giants, Raiders, Warriors, and Notre Dame Fightin’ Irish. I am unbelievably good at air guitar and pretty bad at real ukulele.
