Robin Stevens

Test Prep Tutor

Born and raised in Santa Cruz, I went to high school at Georgiana Bruce Kirby School. The fantastic teachers there fanned the flames of intellectual curiosity in me to a roaring blaze. By the time I finished my freshman year at Kirby, I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. Over the next few years, my positive experiences with one-on-one tutors for calculus and university-level Ancient Greek reinforced my drive.

After Kirby, I attended St. John’s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico. St. John’s is a Great Books program: no tests or textbooks, only original source texts drawn from throughout history. We students were expected to help each other learn difficult material to the best of our collective abilities in seminar-style discussions. I was exposed to multifarious learning styles and vastly different perspectives among my peer group. As we labored through Greek, Dante, Kant, and Einstein’s theory of relativity, each of us became a better learner and a more versatile teacher.

My tutoring philosophy is based on the idea that no two learners are the same, and every learner deserves the utmost respect. As such, no good tutor should approach every student in exactly the same way. The best progress can be made when both teacher and student understand where the other person is coming from. I like to approach anyone I teach on a conversational level and as a fellow learner, not as a simple dispenser of knowledge. From that point, we can both make much greater progress together. I also find a healthy sense of humor to be vital for building a rapport and fostering a fun learning environment.

In my free time, I love to read (fantasy and sci-fi in particular), work on my novel, and play games of any kind. I’m a huge fan of ancient history and world religions; I always have a new pet research project. I enjoy discussing the ins and outs of books and movies. I’m always on the hunt for good food. Lastly, I’m an animal lover: I’ll go far out of my way to pet anything with four legs.
