I was born and raised in the dry heat of Tucson, Arizona. In high school, I stayed engaged through volleyball practice, volunteering, theatrical productions, choir rehearsals, and a host of AP classes. Along the way, I mastered time management and academic efficiency, which are skills that I enjoy imparting in my work as an educator.
At the University of Arizona, I pursued my love for ancient cultures and storytelling by double majoring in classics and creative writing with a minor in art history. It was a great excuse to study abroad, explore Etruscan tombs, read lots of mythology, and write countless papers. I graduated summa cum laude with honors, and, after a stint excavating and teaching in Italy, I was hired to teach middle school Latin in my hometown. It was these years spent as a teacher in which I developed my ability to engage with a multitude of different learning styles.
After some more traveling and writing, I craved the rigorous academic environment of school, so I decided to pursue a graduate degree. I completed my Master’s of Fine Arts in nonfiction writing at the University of Pittsburgh and further solidified my academic prowess. I also became seriously involved in tutoring at my school’s writing center, and I realized how much I enjoyed helping students in a 1-on-1 environment, where I could hone in on concepts that were particularly tricky for each individual.
At AJ, the personal connection individualized tutoring fosters between teacher and student is unparalleled, and it allows me to best guide my students, who are all unique learners and thinkers, to a deeper understanding of the subject matter. I am also constantly surprised by what the world can teach us, and I try to bring that sense of curiosity and joy to each session.
When I’m not tutoring or doing freelance writing, I enjoy hiking, cooking, listening to podcasts, being overly competitive at trivia, and going to the movies.
