I was born in San Mateo, CA, but spent many summers in Lima, Peru, while my parents stayed to work for the American dream. My fascination for science began when I joined the amazing “biotech series” program at San Mateo High. I was chosen for a research internship my senior year which further spiked my curiosity in DNA, RNA, and proteins. How do these small molecules and cells know what to do and at what time? How did scientists clone dolly the sheep? These questions reverberated around my mind.

I brought my imagination to Saint Mary’s College, a small liberal arts school where I obtained my BS in biology. The small classroom size helped me develop great relationships with my professors. I often had 1-on-1 sessions where I was able to discuss my biggest questions about science. When I wasn’t studying, I was volunteering. I volunteered at the local hospital and danced and taught at a non-profit Peruvian dance group, which taught me compassion, patience, and responsibility. After graduation, I conducted clinical research on Hepatitis B at UCSF under the guidance of two wonderful physicians. Currently, I’m in a post-bacc with my goal of applying to medical school.

At AJ, I specialize in helping my students succeed in their science classes. I have a natural skill for explaining biology concepts in basic terms and in different ways according to the student’s learning style. Apart from being a teacher, I like to see myself as a “coach”. My teaching philosophy is to transmit academic confidence as well as self-confidence in my students. I believe if a student can pass the obstacle of a standardized test or tough class it can help for other obstacles later in life.

In my spare time you can find me practicing my Spanish (or French), dancing and teaching Marinera Norteña in my living room, and Netflix binge-watching. I also enjoy traveling and keep a travel blog.
