I was born in North Carolina and studied biology and chemistry at Appalachian State University. I then moved to Orange, TX to work as an environmental educator at Shangri La Botanical Gardens. There, I fell in love with teaching. I taught pre-AP and AP Chemistry for 5 years through the Texas Teaching Fellows program. The experience was challenging but always rewarding; at every step of the way, I improved my ability to explain complex concepts clearly and break them down into more manageable pieces.
During my time teaching, I loved one-on-one tutoring and small group teaching. I enjoyed helping students see how chemistry relates to their lives and others around them. I noticed that everyone learns in a different way, and, as I grew more skilled, I could adapt my style of instruction and lesson to the unique ways that my students learned.
At AJ, the one-on-one tutoring environment empowers my students to get a learning experience that goes beyond the individual assignment or exam. By looking together at the process of learning, skill building, and exam preparation, my students begin to develop their own methods and processes that will remain with them for their whole academic lives. I strive to make each session as useful and memorable as possible. I love creating lessons that have different types of differentiation (kinesthetic, visual, auditory) and enjoy using stories to help students remember key concepts.
In my free time, you can find me playing with my german shepherd and beagle, exploring the outdoors, or performing stand-up and improv.
