In the beginning of 8th grade, my chemistry teacher performed the classic demonstration of throwing sodium metal into water. I watched as the shiny metal skittered along the surface, spontaneously caught fire, and exploded with a deafening boom. From that moment on, I’ve had a tremendous fascination with chemicals and the laws that governed their properties and interactions. Even as the loud and flashy experiments that drew me in gradually gave way to solving problems on paper, my ardor for chemistry endured unabatedly through the years and culminated in my graduation from UCLA with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
The rigorous chemical engineering program at UCLA required me to constantly make use of mathematical and scientific principles from all of my previous courses. As a result, I emerged from the program with a strong background in all levels of math and science, and I eagerly draw upon this background as a math and chemistry tutor at AJ.
My experience as a tutor spans more than six years. As I’ve grown in my ability to break down difficult material into more manageable parts, I’ve earned a reputation for consistently bringing up student academic performance. I believe that successful tutoring is all about explaining a topic in several ways and being able to approach a concept from multiple directions. Because each student is different, individualized instruction is extremely useful for building up mastery and confidence in a manner that makes sense for each type of learner.
Having attended Foothill High School in Pleasanton, I am no stranger to the all-nighters, skipped meals, and stresses that today’s academic atmosphere all too often entails. As an AJ tutor, I seek to mitigate this stress for my students by eliminating sources of confusion, thoroughly explaining concepts, and developing problem-solving confidence, all with a clarity and expertise commensurate with my comprehensive education and extensive experience as a tutor. Additionally, I aim to help my students develop effective study skills, which were not yet obvious to me when I was in high school and in retrospect would have made my own academic experience much less arduous. Through a combination of efficient teaching on my part and the cultivation of effective learning in my students, my goal is to help students achieve better grades and understanding with less stress and exertion.
Outside of AJ Tutoring, you might find me reading books of all kinds, practicing martial arts, or jamming on my guitar!
