I was born and raised in Petaluma and attended UC Santa Barbara, where I received a BS in Pharmacology. In college, I was heavily involved in tutoring and mentoring students, and I delighted in helping students see the excitement and challenge in biology and chemistry. I honed my skill for explaining concepts clearly, and I also became even more adaptable to the diverse learning styles of my students.
After college, I began a career in research, where I loved applying my knowledge in an academic environment that was constantly changing. Though I enjoyed being on the forefront of the field I was passionate about, I realized how much I loved working with young people and helping them explore their interests in the sciences.
I have tutored a wide variety of students of many different ages and interests. I have a deep-seated respect for each student’s personal learning style and try to modify my teaching methods in order to target the student’s strengths. My personal approach to teaching involves an emphasis on communication and personal connections. With a background in counseling and personal experience, I’m able to address the stresses of applying to colleges and taking AP classes. I strive to instill a calming perspective while still applying structure and rigor to each session.
Outside of the offices of AJ Tutoring, I can be found searching for the best beaches in the Bay Area, crafting, volunteering, baking banana bread, and striking up conversations with new and interesting people!
