I was born in Laguna Beach but raised in Poway, a suburb of San Diego. Always interested in current events and history, I decided to study Politics at UC Santa Cruz. In college, I became heavily involved in tutoring, and I found that I had a talent for helping students improve their study habits, written communication, and exam performance.
After graduation, I knew that I wanted to explore international relations and continue my work as an educator. Thus, I moved to Guangzhou, China and began teaching at the international department of a local high school. The department’s main focus was preparing students for university in the United States. I instructed students in AP US History and AP Comparative Government. I also taught hundreds of students how to excel on standardized tests, and I became an expert on multiple choice and essays. I really enjoyed the years I spent teaching in China. I loved seeing my students get accepted to schools abroad, and I was continually inspired by the work they put in to achieve their goals.
As a test preparation tutor, I have found that each student learns the concepts in a different way, and each student comes into the classroom with different conceptual strengths and weaknesses. Because of these unique variations, no two tutoring sessions are the same, and helping students achieve success on exams is interesting as it is rewarding. Some students need help with their writing, others need to improve their time management skills, and still some may need additional information about a tricky concept. Though each of my students has required a different approach, I have found that a calming view that grounds the preparation in scope and perspective is always beneficial.
Outside of the offices of AJ Tutoring, you can find me reading a good book or enjoying one of California’s gorgeous hiking trails.
