I was raised in Concord, Massachusetts, famous for revolutionary beginnings and literary achievements. Growing up, I was surrounded and inspired by the spirit of Thoreau that he imparted on my hometown. School field trips included the site of the ‘shot heard round the world’, and Walden Pond was my favorite place for a dip during the dog days of August.
I worked hard in high school and was accepted to MIT, where I majored in aeronautics, the study of all things airplane-related. While at MIT, I spent a year abroad in Sweden, and I did an internship in Japan at Nissan, which lead to me doing an MS and PhD at the University of Tokyo, also in aeronautics. In my years as a student, I grew highly efficient at absorbing new material, managing my time, and developing subject mastery. I also developed a talent for explaining particularly tricky concepts to friends and classmates. I discovered that I had a skill for breaking down complex ideas into simple parts.
After graduation, I entered the simulation-driven design field. I worked as an aerodynamicist, analyzing simulation results for vehicle ventilation systems in Yokohama, and then working as a mechanical engineer at a Palo Alto vehicle startup. I also tutored high school students in physics and math. From my time in the professional engineering world, I learned how essential good communication is to getting correct results, and I take extra care to keep tutoring sessions interactive.
My tutoring style emphasizes a productive back-and-forth that trains the student to adapt the right mindset for approaching difficult science and math classes. I enjoy building confidence and mastery in my students at AJ, and the best part of tutoring for me is when students start to trust their intuition and gain the self-belief that comes from solid test performance.
Outside of the offices of AJ, you can find me reading widely, learning as much as possible, and hiking around the beautiful Bay Area!
