I was born in Nicaragua, a small and beautiful country with lots of volcanoes and lakes located in Central America. I moved to Hayward, California, at the age of twelve, and I have lived in California ever since. In Nicaragua, I was part of the honor roll every year. In the US, however, my first few years were very tough, as I didn’t know the language and I struggled with most of the courses I took. The subject that always spoke the same language to me was math, and I immersed myself in its universality and beauty. In high school, I enjoyed helping my friends with their math homework, and I found a talent for explaining difficult problems in ways that made sense.
Seeking to develop my analytical mind and problem-solving prowess, I earned my BA in Economics with a concentration in Statistics and a minor in Mathematics from Cal State East Bay. During my years as an undergrad, I helped college friends and relatives prepare for tests and master their math homework. I always had a passion for helping people, especially students who struggle with math. I love the empowerment I can see in my students when they conquer challenging topics for the first time.
At AJ, I specialize in supporting students in calculus and Spanish. My tutoring style emphasizes interactive learning in which students can visualize and compare problems by incorporating hands-on, real-world experiences. I also find that working in a 1-on-1 setting gives my students the opportunity to cultivate a deep knowledge and interest in the subject. Most importantly, my students feel free to open up and ask all the so-called ‘silly questions’ that are often omitted in the classroom. Favoring conceptual understanding over rote memorization, I strive to make sure that each of my students gains confidence in his or her approach to the material.
In my spare time, I enjoy salsa dancing, sports, running, hiking, reading and yoga!
