I grew up near Portland, Oregon, and attended Lakeridge High School, where I excelled in my coursework and particularly enjoyed math and science classes like calculus and biology. I love learning the nature of things, and I’ve found those two subjects to be fruitful engines for understanding. I also enjoy showing others how fun these subjects can be. I think that people learn best when they are interested in the material, and I aim get students excited about science!
Bolstered by the support of my enthusiastic high school teachers, I set off to attend the University of Oregon and study Cellular, Developmental, and Molecular Biology. My favorite classes involved genetics. In Human Molecular Genetics, we looked at scientific literature in order to gain an understanding of the basis of human development and disease. I enjoyed combining my skill for critical reading with my interest in genes in order to enrich my understanding of how diseases form. I also minored in chemistry and greatly enjoyed the laboratory aspects of my chemistry classes. Outside of the sciences, I am also interested in literature, politics, and history.
My science students at AJ benefit from my enthusiasm for the subject and my commitment to instilling a clear understanding of the most important concepts for each area. Rather than memorizing formulas, my students begin to pick up an intuition for math and science that will benefit them throughout their academic careers.
As a test preparation tutor, I deeply enjoy helping students break through the intimidation and mystique of exams like the SAT and ACT. Eventually, my students realize that they have the skills necessary to feel well prepared on standardized tests. I foster familiarization with the exam format so that the inner strengths of each learner can emerge.
Outside of the offices of AJ Tutoring, you can often find me hiking and backpacking. I find that the outdoors is the best place to relax and think. Time outside is never time wasted! I also enjoy watching and playing sports including basketball, football, golf, and baseball.
