Adrienne Burgin

Academic Tutor

Surrounded by teachers growing up, I always knew the importance and value of a strong education. Those role models led me to want to teach others myself, which in turn led me to coach water polo and eventually to tutor alongside my career in science.

A native of the Bay Area, I wanted a new experience for college, so I traded the mild California climate for snowy Minnesota winters to complete my bachelor’s in biology with a minor in anthropology at Macalester College in Saint Paul. That wasn’t quite enough adventure, so I spent a semester studying abroad in Denmark before taking a long trek to earn a graduate degree at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Having a global education has taught me so much about the similarities and differences between educational philosophies, nature, and people. It taught me always to be curious and to constantly be open to new ideas, two principles I hope to share with my students.

When it comes to biology, what’s not to find fascinating? The “why” and “how” of the world around us have always enamored me. My passion for every aspect of biology from photosynthesis to physiology has never waivered, and I think there’s at least one topic in biology that everyone can connect with, because biology connects us all. I also appreciate that biology is never alone in the world of STEM. It comes with chemistry, physics, writing, and math, and I enjoy exploring the ways it relates these many elements of our lives.

As a tutor, my goal is always to guide my students toward improving and achieving the goals they have set. I encourage them to ask questions, because it is one of the best things a student can do to build their understanding and confidence. I believe in providing the structure, tools, and support to help them reach their full academic potential, but I also believe learning can and should be fun, so always try to infuse some fun (and funny) into the core of every session.

Outside of tutoring, I enjoy swimming, hiking, and reading science fiction and mystery novels.
