Born and raised in the Bay Area, I have always had an affinity for teaching. I began tutoring when my little brothers started school, helping them with assignments and setting a precedent for enjoying academics. Throughout high school and university, I helped roommates, friends, and peers with problem sets and with test preparation.
I graduated from Cornell University majoring in economics. In addition to my major, I took coursework in a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, mathematics, and econometrics. Mathematics is especially important to me, not only as a prerequisite for many courses, but also as a way to better understand the major concepts and themes in each specific area area of study. I’ve come to appreciate the importance of proper practice and preparation to truly understand a subject matter.
As a calculus tutor, introducing students to new topics that contextualize what they have been learning in class for the “ah-ha!” moment is extremely rewarding. Rather than explaining theorems with no proofs, I find it better to walk through the reasoning behind each concept to let the student understand the process so they can apply the concept themselves. In a 1-on-1 format, I emphasize the application of topics to practice problems to solidify students’ mastery. I find that I excel at helping bridge the gap between conceptual knowledge and the application of knowledge to problems and testing environments.
When I’m not tutoring, I enjoy baseball, football, and board games. Whether it be cheering on the Niners and Giants, or haggling for more wheat in Catan, good-natured competition is a mainstay of my down time.
