Andrew Vuong

Test Prep and Academic Tutor

Growing up in Southern California, I was always a bit of a puzzle addict. I would religiously do my daily sudoku puzzle, and after that you could find my head buried in a crossword book. Even when my family would go shopping or pick up a prescription at the local CVS Pharmacy, I would wander my way to the puzzle books and do a quick word search or two while waiting! As I got older, that interest evolved into a passion for riddles, strategy-based games, and ultimately academics as well.

I was fortunate enough to be successful throughout my school years. My disposition for logic and puzzles helped me “solve” assignments and exams in all sorts of subjects. At one point I started to do informal tutoring in high school calculus, chemistry, and French – first for my friends, but eventually for many students who shared classes with me. I found that I loved tutoring and sharing with others the strategies, methods, and ways of thinking that had gotten me so far in school. I enjoyed it so much, in fact, that while I entered Northwestern University with plans to pursue a STEM major, I eventually made my way to a degree in secondary teaching.

My studies at Northwestern taught me several practices to bring out the best in students. I learned to leverage students’ personal experiences to enrich the learning environment and to always operate on the assumption that students have the potential to learn more and grow more – because they always can. As an educator of chemistry and French, I employed a variety of methods to teach the subject material, but at the core of those methods was always an emphasis on student-centered and student-driven education. That’s the kind of learning experience I hope to create with my tutees.

Though I finished my degree and my student teaching semester, I continue to tutor for the unique opportunities that a 1-on-1 experience can provide. Forging strong relationships with students and differentiating lessons are important factors in anyone’s learning; tutoring maximizes those factors for a strong and robust educational experience. Working with AJ Tutoring means I can help countless students improve their test-taking strategies, reinforce their knowledge, and embrace confidence going forward.

When I’m not working with students, I love to spend my time playing tennis, trying out new recipes, and diving into a good video game!
