Anqi Shao

Academic Tutor

I received my bachelor’s degree majoring in computational mathematics at Shandong University. After graduation, I worked in China briefly as a tutor before attending graduate school at the University of Florida. During my seven years of graduate studies, I worked as a teaching assistant, and I have rich teaching experience in precalculus, calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations.

After I received my Ph.D in applied mathematics, I worked as an adjunct lecturer at UF for two years before moving to California to become a software engineer. During my experiences, I’ve found that teaching is a chance to both offer your insight to help your students and a chance to look at things you are already familiar with from a totally different perspective. I believe that the learning process is never meant to be a straight line, so my goal as a tutor is to not only help my students achieve success in test scores in the short run, but also help them form good learning habits for the long run.

I enjoy teaching precalculus and algebra, because these courses are the fundamentals for all the math courses students will take in college. They are essentially the pivot point in differentiating elementary math and the “real” math. While many students are intimidated by mathematics, if they master these fundamentals they have the tools needed to succeed in future courses. I enjoy the opportunity to guide students through new concepts and develop their confidence in the subject.

In my experiences teaching both academic mathematics and the SAT and ACT, I’ve found that it’s important to know how to prioritize, both in managing study time and in study methods. I believe that especially in math, enough practice is the key to success, so I work with my students to ensure they’re getting the practice they need and studying effectively. It’s my job to transform complex ideas into simple concepts, but repeating these concepts through practice problems and managing the learning process helps students become confident, truly master the material, and move towards independence.

During my spare time, I enjoy playing guitar, violin, tennis, basketball, and Go. I am also a terrible skateboarder, but I really love it.
