Brianna Wingard

Academic Tutor

I graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude from Santa Clara University with a Bachelor of Science in psychology, a minor in public health, and a concentration in children, family, and society.

Although I was always interested in education, I did not discover my passion for teaching until college. In a few courses at Santa Clara, I volunteered with various non-profits teaching math and restorative justice principles to middle school children. I designed lessons with my peers, taught lectures in creative ways, and incorporated the parents and teachers into the students’ learning journeys. I also had the amazing opportunity to independently teach two college lectures as a peer educator, and I held weekly office hours for students to ask questions and receive 1-on-1 feedback. These experiences sparked my love for teaching.

What I love about teaching is the ability to step into someone’s shoes and discover what they currently understand. I find tremendous value in breaking down challenging concepts to the fundamental pieces and then building onto them so that students understand the framework of concepts. I thoroughly enjoy seeing the lightbulb turn on when students grasp a challenging concept! I am also a firm believer in not only teaching concepts, but also teaching how to learn. The process of learning is just as important as the answers. I am passionate about study skills, including time management and organization, and I love integrating these skills into our learning together. I also believe in giving detailed feedback as it strongly supports our learning journeys and helps us know what we do not yet know. Lastly, I love making material relevant to students’ lives. For example, if we are working on a math problem, I might relate some of the concepts to a student’s favorite sport or food.

Outside of tutoring, I love to dance, sing, walk with my dog, and travel to new places.
