While growing up, I loved math because finding the correct answer rarely left room for debate. Because of my passion for the subject, everyone thought I’d become an engineer or mathematician.

Then I went to UC Santa Cruz and was forced to take a writing class focused on sociology. The historical analytics, the sentence structures, and the knowledge of poetry, politics, and culture all left me wanting more, and I spent the next four years lost in books, essays, and journals. While I received my degree in sociology, I never missed the opportunity to take courses in psychology, history, politics, anthropology, poetry, Spanish, or really anything that grabbed my interest, including linear algebra and vector calculus. What I gained from all those courses was the understanding that learning can be found in any corner of the world, and anyone and everyone can teach you something.

Upon graduating, I moved to Medellín, Colombia, where I took courses in Spanish and earned my living teaching English for a year and a half. When I returned to the Bay Area, I learned from the forgotten and hidden members of society in San Francisco’s Tenderloin as a social worker.

At AJ Tutoring, I have the opportunity to share my experiences and my passion for learning with my students. I specialize in working with elementary and middle school students, and I enjoy helping them develop skills across the curriculum, from developing a solid grasp of math to finding their confidence expressing themselves in writing.

Both at work and beyond, I am passionate about making the world a better place and enjoying life as it comes.
