Over the course of my life, I have had the privilege of interacting with and learning from fantastic teachers and mentors. When I struggled to simultaneously learn French, Hindi, and Arabic in fifth grade, I had teachers who gave me bridge curricula, extra quizzes, and reading lessons. When testing anxiety meant I nearly failed English in the tenth grade, my friend helped me learn time management techniques. In eleventh grade, my teachers encouraged my prolonged interests in Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poetry and women’s history. These positive experiences instilled in me a love of lifelong learning and teaching and inspired me to become the tutor I am today.
I graduated from the University of California, Davis, with majors in history and anthropology. At UC Davis, not only did I spend hours upon hours reading historical monographs and writing, but I also served as an academic peer advisor for students of history and economics. Over the course of two years, I met with over 300 students and helped them build academic pathways for their time at university. I saw students fight to maintain their academic standing, and I saw the same students succeed with the requisite tools and the right guidance, professors, and assistance.
Through my work, I have developed a strong tutoring philosophy. I understand and recognize that all students can successfully meet their academic goals, and I provide them the skills and the tools to get there. In particular, K-8 students are building study techniques that help them succeed long-term. I love to help students find learning methods and note-taking systems that they can carry with them throughout their studies, and I tailor each session to the students’ interests, goals, and needs.
I enjoy tutoring English and history because working through the processes of reading, analyzing, and writing feels like detective work. When I work with students new to these methods, I love to liken reading comprehension and document analysis to things we do every day such as reading the news or writing emails. Teaching history is about making historical concepts and analysis familiar, and achievable. I also find my work with middle and elementary school students rewarding, as I build their confidence in their own abilities, expand their passion for learning, and lay the foundations for their academic success now and in the future across the curriculum.
In my free time, I love to cook, bake, and knit.
