During my undergraduate years at UC Riverside, I worked as a Math tutor in the AVID program at the high school I attended. I worked with groups of four to five students in subjects from Algebra to AP Calculus. I enjoyed facilitating their learning process and using the questioning technique to encourage student’s critical thinking versus feeding the answer to the student. I greatly enjoyed six years of math tutoring before venturing into the corporate world. I quickly realized that I missed interacting with students and decided to make a career change into education.
I have since worked as a college algebra and calculus tutor at Cal State East Bay and have done 1-on-1 and in-home tutoring with students around the Bay Area. I believe that 1-on-1 tutoring is the most effective way for a student to maximize his or her learning. The student gets to shed all social pressures that occur in the classroom, whether it be shyness or the fear of being judged for asking a question. In these individualized sessions, we can create a safe environment to focus on what really matters—understanding the content.
In my spare time, you will find me either jogging, relaxing by a body of water, socializing, traveling or reading up on the ideas of history’s great philosophical thinkers.
