Jonathan Scher

Test Prep and Academic Tutor

I am a native of the Bay Area, born at Stanford and raised in Los Altos Hills. Wanting to experience the feeling of three seasons (including some sub-zero temperatures) and life outside of Silicon Valley, I headed to the Midwest to Ann Arbor to study at the University of Michigan, where I graduated with a B.S. with Honors Distinction in chemistry and a minor in philosophy.

In my introductory courses in college, I was disappointed to see my peers be dissuaded from majoring in the sciences because of their grades. I tackled these courses and figured out what it took to excel, so I wanted to help students who were passionate about the sciences but needed some additional help to develop the necessary foundational skills for success. This spurred me to work on campus in the Science Learning Center as a study group facilitator my last two years of college. In this role, I led groups in general chemistry, physical chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry.

I found that students would often ask for the answers to difficult problems they could not solve themselves, which is a common occurrence when concepts are difficult to grasp. But just knowing the answer to a problem that they didn’t solve themselves gives students a false sense of confidence in being able to solve similar problems in the future. Thus, instead of giving out the answer to a student (or even showing them how to solve the problem) I prefer to work with them, providing strategies to help them discover, learn, and master the material so they can reach the answer themselves. This is the approach I bring to AJ Tutoring.

Along with my love for teaching, I am passionate about biomedical research. I have had stints in research labs at Harvard, Stanford, and the NIH, where I’ve conducted research in developmental neurobiology, cancer biology, and computational chemistry. Because of my research interests, I value the importance of showing the real-world scientific applications of concepts when teaching.

When I’m not tutoring or in the lab, you can find me playing tennis, practicing piano, and avidly rooting for the Warriors and all Michigan sports.
