Madeline Searle-Bray

Academic Tutor

I was born in Oakland and grew up in Alameda where I graduated from Encinal High School. In high school, I loved English literature and environmental studies, and I rowed for Oakland Strokes. After beginning studies in environmental policy at Humboldt State University, I transferred to Mills College where I received my bachelor’s in economics.

While studying at Mills, I was a teaching assistant and tutor in International Trade, International Finance, and Macroeconomics. My year assisting these classes was my favorite year of college, as I got to spend time creating assignments, leading class discussions, facilitating test preparation, and sharing my passion for what I felt were some of the most interesting, cross disciplinary, and relevant courses offered at the time. I love economics because it touches everything in our lives and it taught me that learning anything can be exciting if you find ways to connect it to your lived experience.

I had realized at an early age that I wanted to work in education. Throughout middle school, high school, and college, I was a nanny, and the experience I built working with children one on one helped me excel as a tutor and teaching assistant. I love the opportunity to witness and be a part of learning at all developmental stages, taking every opportunity to read to my kids or work on homework with them. During my undergraduate studies, I also received certification as a yoga instructor and taught in my spare time. Teaching yoga helped me hone my skills as an educator in an environment emphasizing customization to the student’s individual needs and interests. My teaching philosophy has been heavily influenced by these experiences, where success is defined by the student’s connection with and integration of the material above all else.

As with many aspiring teachers, I had amazing teachers that were able to make difficult material exciting and instilled in me a passion for learning that I am eager to share with younger students. From a young age, I have had a love for mathematics that I attribute to those teachers who made sure that students like myself had fun while mastering the conceptual foundation as well as the process of solving problems. This experience taught me that creating confidence and sharpening analytical skills are the backbone to success in any class. I like to work with students to build both their interest and competence in tackling new and complex problems, as I feel their attitude towards and experience with learning material is reflected in their studies and results.

When not tutoring, I love to hike, read novels and memoirs, practice yoga, and cook at home.
