Raised in Menlo Park, I attended Menlo-Atherton High School and went on to graduate from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where I studied English and Russian literature. There, I reveled in seeing my interest in identity politics appear in fascinating mediums, like those of comic books, clothes (through costuming), and short stories.

My fascination with identity politics stems from my own experience of being a young child immigrant. I was born in Tokyo, Japan, to French-Korean parents. For a short period, I lived in Japan and France before my family and I moved to the United States. Often at a loss—culturally, linguistically, and even socially—books were my refuge. I yearned to express myself. I think that’s why my time at the Urban Lab Center, in Montreal, resonated so deeply with me. The Urban Lab Center is an initiative on the behalf of McGill and a variety of Montreal artists to provide free creative classes to underprivileged youths in gentrified neighborhoods of Montreal. As the drama teacher’s assistant, I helped kids from the ages of 9 to 13—the majority of whom were bilingual, if not trilingual, and also immigrants or children of immigrants—with their acting exercises. Unlike me at that age, they were already finding and amplifying their voices. All they needed was a little nudge.

Instilling that type of self-confidence is also what led me to be an essay tutor. I think of myself as the polishing agent; the real stars are the students. At AJ Tutoring, I now teach elementary and middle school students in all aspects of their academic subjects as well as on the ISEE, HSPT, and SSAT. I also work with high school students to succeed in their English classes and develop their writing skills.  The one-on-one approach is beneficial because it allows me to converse with students and get to know them personally; most of the time, I find that students already know what skills they need support in developing. Sometimes tailoring sessions are a question of adapting to how a student learns best (visual, auditory, interactive, etc); at other times, it’s a question of building up a student’s self-esteem.

I greatly enjoy instilling confidence in all my students, tailoring lessons to each student’s preferred learning style, and joining them in their learning journeys. I find it rewarding to watch  as they take on challenges they may not have believed themselves capable of before!

In my free time, I enjoy making playlists, reading comics, drawing, and swimming.
