I am originally from Southern California, I graduated from UC Santa Cruz, where I earned a B.A. in Mathematics with a minor in STEM education.
I was always a good student, one that passed all my classes and did the work that I needed to succeed. However, I never had a passion for mathematics util, as a sophomore in high school, I had the best math teacher that I ever had. She inspired me to learn and understand math in a different way. My high school experience and my years in higher education have shaped who I am and my inspiration to be an educator. Attending UC Santa Cruz helped me gain more experience working with students of all ages and backgrounds. Minoring in STEM education helped me polish my tutoring style by enabling me to combine theory and practical practice teaching students.
I tutored for four years prior to coming to AJ Tutoring, and I have worked from students of all ages, from elementary school to returning students as old as 60. I’ve tutored privately, at my local community college, and at Cabrillo College. My favorite subject to tutor is calculus, since that is where I truly fell in love with math. In addition to my work with AJ Tutoring, I am also a Cal Teach intern. Cal Teach is a California-wide program, run through the UCs, that brings STEM students into the classroom. This has provided me with a lot of experience in middle school and high school classrooms around the area. I have learned so much from tutoring students of all ages, and my students continue to teach me new things everyday.
My educational philosophy is to create an environment in which students are able to develop their ideas free from judgment. I want each student to understand that I care not only about their school success, but also about their personal success as well. I want my students to recognize that they are capable of anything they set their mind to and to have the confidence to pursue their goals.
Aside from tutoring, I enjoy drawing, rock climbing, and playing video games. I also enjoy baking, and my family says that I make the best chocolate chip cookies.
