Michael Vogel

Associate Academic Dean, Psychology Department Head, & Academic Tutor

I was born and raised in Palo Alto, California, and attended Henry M. Gunn high school in the heart of the Silicon Valley. After journeying south, I graduated from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo with a B.S. in Social Science, a concentration in Organizational Sociology, and independent study in Behavioral Psychology. Moving forward, I plan to pursue a doctoral program in Behavioral Psychology. Aside from my studies, I also enjoyed many years in the Cal Poly symphony ensemble, holding principal positions in Clarinet performance, and spent many warm evenings on the beach!

Prior to joining the AJ tutoring team, I held several positions in research and project management throughout the Bay Area. I interned in grant writing and non-profit organization at InnVision Shelter Network, a bay area organization dedicated to housing and supporting the homeless and transient populations in Santa Clara County. Following that I served a yearlong tenure as a Medical Research Associate at Stanford University, catering to the variety of projects encompassed by a complex and myriad school of medicine. From each of these experiences I cultivated an acute sense for dynamic, content-centered writing and skillful display of information vital to the enrichment of essay skills.

At AJ tutoring I work primarily with Academic English and Essay preparation clients, focusing principally on helping the individual student find his or her own voice and expression. I strongly believe that there is no “right or wrong” when it comes to fostering an idea or opinion on a subject, and my teaching style is tailored to helping clients find confident and eloquent means to express the ideas that they generate organically. My favorite moment with a student is the second that they read through their own work and are “wowed” by it, realizing that within everyone there is the potential to be an amazing writer.

While not at work, I enjoy hiking, writing, and playing video games with friends!
