Mike Henika

Academic Tutor

I developed an interest in education when I became an uncle at a young age. I found that I really enjoyed teaching my niece basic math and puzzle solving, and that I was able to make the experience fun for her. I also know that having helpful resources made a huge difference for me throughout my own experience in grade school, and I want to set students up to have the freedom to pursue whatever major they want in college.

I grew up in San Ramon, CA, and I went to UC Davis initially as music major. While the performing arts were, and still are a passion of mine, I also loved my math and science courses: I enjoy the puzzle-solving aspects of mathematics and learning how the world works through science. I switched my degree to natural sciences, an all-encompassing major designed for people interested in math and science education.

I knew I wanted to use my newly acquired college degree to do help students. For a few years, I worked freelance as a tutor before being hired by a tutoring agency in Danville, where I worked for eight years. I also worked as a middle school Math Olympiad coach. I’ve come to prefer 1-on-1 tutoring, as it allows tutors to develop a great rapport with their students and to focus on their learning style, strengths, and weaknesses. My approach has always been to keep the experience fun and positive for my students.

In my spare time, I play the trombone in multiple bands and enjoy gaming, reading, and watching Bay Area sports (Go Warriors!).
