Nate Travis

Academic Tutor

To me, science and math have always been about fun and the joy of learning. For example, while studying computer science and math at Carnegie Mellon University, some of my biggest and proudest projects were developing games and game AIs. I enjoyed (and still enjoy) learning new concepts and applying them to a purpose by building things with the skills I developed.

After graduating from CMU, I became a software engineer at Google, where I added a more practical bent to my CS and math knowledge. Nevertheless, I have always remained driven by my love of learning and skill-development, and through mentoring many young and aspiring software engineers over the years, I found that teaching is also a passion of mine.

My goal with my students at AJ is to spread my own joy and fascination for math, and more than anything, to help students realize that these subjects are not merely a necessary grade on their report card to graduate from high school. Exploring the concepts themselves, and their potential applications to students’ lives, can be interesting and enjoyable in itself. Beyond helping my students find passion for the material, I also work to help them build their confidence and to lay solid foundations for their academic success.
