Sharmeen Khan

Academic Tutor & Director of Client Services

I grew up in Chicago, where I attended Main East High School. I participated in many extracurriculars during my high school years, but my main activities were policy debate and scholastic bowl. I then went off to the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where I majored in political science and minored in molecular and cellular biology. I was involved in mentoring programs on and off campus as well as in cultural associations throughout my time there.

After graduating from UIUC, I spent a year as an Americorps service year member in City Year Chicago, where I assisted in under-resourced classes in the West and South Sides of Chicago. This exposure to educational inequity was formative for me in deciding to pursue a career in education. I joined Teach for America’s corps and taught high school AP Biology and health at a high school in the Dallas area. I loved seeing my students succeed both in and out of the classroom. I also received my master’s in education policy through Southern Methodist University.

As a teacher and a tutor over ten years, I always want to give my students the systems and study skills that allow them to develop their independence as students. My goal is to look beyond their immediate material and find ways to help them succeed in the long term. I’ve learned to recognize that every problem doesn’t have the same solution and that learning is individual. It’s how we make our own connections to the material that drives our passion to learn. Therefore, the same method of instruction might not capture the interest of and facilitate the growth of every student, so I am always looking for new ways to help my students learn. I work with my students to find creative solutions to their individual challenges and learning styles.

When I am not tutoring, I am usually workshopping new recipes or playing video games with my husband and friends. I also love to go hiking and try new food in the area.
