I grew up in Southern California and graduated summa cum laude from UC Santa Barbara with a BS in ecology and evolution. After college I took a research position at UC Riverside in a laboratory studying evolutionary genetics. There, I discovered a love for data analysis that drove me to publish peer reviewed research in statistical methods and eventually brought me to the Bay Area to pursue a graduate degree in biostatistics.
At UCSB, I fostered and broadened my love for learning about the natural world and I had the chance to study classical literature, math, physics, chemistry, and biology with leading scholars, but I often found the huge classes and impersonal instruction somewhat lacking. At UCR I was afforded the opportunity to teach laboratory sections to small groups of freshmen biology students, and I found I have a passion for teaching that I now carry with me into every aspect of my life. Working closely with students, I learned the enormous value of teaching difficult concepts one-on-one, so when I went looking for my next teaching position tutoring seemed an obvious choice.
Standardized tests present students with a unique challenge, and I delight in the opportunity to share what I know and help them achieve their goals. The SAT and ACT are hurdles that are far from insurmountable and can instead be excellent opportunities to build the confidence students need to conquer all of the obstacles life will toss in their way. It’s my philosophy that every student has unique strengths to draw upon and that it’s my job to find and bolster those while also giving students a new set of tools to bring to bear against the SAT and ACT.
Along with teaching and learning, I have life-long passions for nature and the night sky. When I’m not tutoring or studying for my own exams you can often find me chasing bugs down some quiet forest path. I’ve also been known to indulge a devotion to amateur astronomy, a hobby that fills many cold nights with boundless wonder.
