John Prusynski

Test Prep and Academic Tutor

Growing up, I always wanted to be a scientist: first a paleontologist, then an astronomer, then a physicist. I relished math and science classes and took as many as possible throughout middle school and high school. When I arrived at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, however, a scheduling mishap landed me in first semester Norwegian, and I loved it more than anything else I had ever studied. Before I knew it, languages were my primary academic interest, and after majoring in Spanish, Chinese, and Scandinavian Studies, I continued on to get an MA in Scandinavian Studies.

As a college student, I volunteered as a tutor and teacher for international students in conversational English. This experience introduced me to students with a wide variety of academic backgrounds and learning styles. I began to realize how much I enjoyed teaching and how I excelled at working dynamically with a diversity of student learning styles. In graduate school, I taught first year Norwegian and organized the Norwegian language table, where speakers from around campus came to practice Norwegian.

The time I valued most highly as a teacher was when I had the chance to interact with students individually. During office hours or in 1-on-1 conversations at language table, I could get instant feedback about the level of student understanding, and I could adapt my teaching method to the unique needs of that student. Nothing was more gratifying than seeing students gain sudden interest in what they were learning, or when I could hear them applying what they had learned when they spoke. This passion for teaching students led me to AJ Tutoring, where I deeply enjoy the customization and efficiency of the 1-on-1 academic environment.

In my spare time, I enjoy listening to, playing, and reading about classical music. I also practice yoga and go running. I love traveling, and I’ve spent time in Spain, China, and Norway. On weekends, I play board games with friends and go hiking in the beautiful parks of California!
