Saw Htun

Academic Tutor

I received my BS in Biology with a minor in Public Health and MS in Global Medicine at USC. Science is my forte, and I am especially passionate about health, human rights, and education. Before becoming a tutor, I worked abroad for a NGO called IOM studying the vulnerability of moving populations to HIV/AIDs, and I have created presentations to advise policy makers on treating itinerant people.

My teaching experience ranges from eighth graders aiming for national honor programs to homeless and low income women in Los Angeles’ Skid Row. I have taught algebra, biology, chemistry and standardized test preparation in both group and 1-on-1 settings. I am especially fond of 1-on-1 tutoring because I enjoy the close relationship I develop with my students. I also get the chance to encourage learning beyond the class and genuine interest in the subject matter.

As an avid reader, my approach to education is founded on curiosity and learning for the sake of learning. Because each individual student comes with his or her own level of curiosity, passion and abilities, I have come to excel at honing my teaching style to fit the needs of each student. Education is a lifelong journey, and I strive to help students develop the passion and confidence to succeed and enjoy it along the way.

Besides reading, for which I have an extensive reading list growing faster by the minute, I love to write and draw. One of my dreams in life is to publish a novel. I often like to work on personal learning projects, which may range from learning python to reading everything I can about a certain subject. I also love to travel. In fact, I partially funded my backpacking trip through Southeast Asia by ghostwriting short fiction!

Happy parents and students.

The most helpful part of my tutoring was the way that my tutor helped me to build confidence in myself and in my abilities.  Read what others are saying
