Biography

Education and mathematics have played important roles in my life. Growing up, my father would pose mathematical puzzles that would challenge my siblings and me. He instilled a sense of wonder in numbers and the importance of storytelling that comes with relating that information. In high school and later in college at UCLA, I broke away from the competitive nature of academics and opted to work with the students in my classes who wanted to improve their understanding. Through study groups and other cooperative environments, I found that  my understanding of various subjects grew so much more than doing it by myself. I found joy in sharing and receiving knowledge in supportive ways.

After college, I worked in a variety of educational environments including schools in both Southern California and the Bay Area, educational companies that built videos and other educational resources, and specialized schools to help students who needed more support. Seeing both the classroom and curriculum building sides of education has helped build my approaches to bring engaging and fun lessons to my students. In tutoring, these tools help students connect to material in the spaces we share.

The beauty of the student-teacher relationship in tutoring environments is building a space where both of us can take the time to really focus and ask the sorts of questions that can’t always be addressed in larger classroom settings. Students get a chance to explore with a guide, so they have support when presented with new and potentially overwhelming content. Math can be difficult for many, but knowing you have a tutor on your side that can help you through the rough patches can really reduce the stress brought on by new and challenging subjects.

Outside of education, I enjoy working with my writer’s group where I am currently in the process of completing my first novel. I’ve been building my collections of stories over the last three years. Also, I am an avid reader and film enthusiast. So, I am always open to a discussion on classic films, literature, and advances in science.

Happy Parents and Students

""My tutor was fantastic in helping me understand how to begin to look as problems on the SAT. They helped to explain difficult concepts in simple ways, and gave me insight as to how I would see these concepts presents on the test." "
