The University of California system recently announced that, due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, it is suspending the standardized test requirement for students applying for fall 2021 freshman admission.
On the UC’s admissions website, they note that students are still welcome to submit SAT and ACT scores if they are able to take the tests. The UC admissions department also notes that submitting SAT and ACT scores:
- can support students’ statewide UC eligibility
- can support applications for certain scholarships
- can help students fulfill certain UC graduation requirements
Finally, the UC admissions department was clear that this change to the standardized testing requirement is temporary and is not intended to be a permanent shift in admissions policy. For the class of 2022 and beyond, students should assume that they will need to submit SAT and/or ACT scores as part of their application.
We at AJ Tutoring are still recommending that students take the SAT and/or ACT and submit scores if at all possible. As is true every year, the UC system gets an overwhelming number of applicants, and strong SAT and ACT scores are a great way to differentiate your application.
