Biography

I’ve had a love of history and English from a young age; some of my earliest memories are of my parents reading to me at bedtime. At Stanford University, where I majored in history with a focus on the United States, I was fortunate to take classes with several truly inspiring professors, including Jack Rakove and Richard White. I also minored in English and had the opportunity to take classes in the university’s excellent creative writing program.

After graduation, I worked at a film literary agency in Los Angeles. I received my MFA in Creative Writing from Johns Hopkins University, where I taught an undergraduate introduction to fiction and poetry course as an adjunct professor. Teaching there was a rewarding and enriching experience, and I found that the students’ enthusiasm and curiosity deepened my own appreciation for the material.

At AJ Tutoring, I am dedicated to helping students further their study of English and history.  I think that developing writing and close reading skills is not only incredibly useful, it can be fun, too! History is best appreciated as a narrative of social forces, beliefs, and personalities, rather than a rote collection of dates and names. The more I can help students see how the pieces fit together, the better they will do in class, and the more they’ll remember in the future.

In my free time I like to read, play competitive video games, and watch movies.
