Biography

When I was a kid, I would drag my mom to the library every week so I could fill my bag with books. As I grew older, my love of reading naturally developed into a love of literature, and English became my favorite class. What started with learning about all the puzzle pieces that go into telling a meaningful story became a passion for exploring why a story’s message matters. I also developed a passion for creative writing, which gave me another perspective through which to analyze and understand stories.

My first teaching experience was in high school, when I tutored younger students in French. This sparked my interest in one-on-one instruction, and I continued developing my teaching skills while earning my bachelor’s degree in creative writing at Oberlin College. I worked as a teaching assistant in the creative writing department and even taught my own class on Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series. These experiences taught me the importance of meeting students where their interests lie and using those interests to make learning more engaging and effective.

My favorite part of tutoring is tailoring a lesson to what I know about a student. As an academic tutor, I love highlighting how their favorite story or character represents a common theme. For my SAT/ACT students, I think it’s important to play to both their strengths and weaknesses to best prepare them for the test. I also love the symbiotic relationship between student and tutor; I haven’t succeeded until they can explain the writing technique, grammar rule, or math problem to me.

I’m still a voracious reader, but my perfect afternoons now include working on my own short stories and novels, trying a new bread or cookie recipe, and, of course, browsing the library stacks.
