Marine Explorers

Do you want to know how whales can dive to such deep depths? Did you know we have more detailed maps of Mars than the ocean floor? What’s a day in the life of a sea turtle vet tech Modeling scientific method: paper squid and buoyancy experiments. like? Come explore the marine environment and its inhabitants!

Locations: Burlingame

Cost: $140/hr

Recommended hours: 6-10

Goals:

  • understand marine mammal diving through hands on labs
  • perform a health profile of stranded sea turtle model and learn about the natural and anthropogenic threats to sea turtles
  • understand buoyancy and ocean currents using the scientific method and density experiments
  • map a small ocean floor model using a simple sonar simulation and graphing skills

Course Description:

Take your student’s curiosity of our ocean world beyond nature shows with hands-on activities and experiments. Students in this course will explore diving and insulation adaptations of some of the most charismatic species in the oceans via laboratory experiments, explore threats and challenges of species we share the ocean with through role playing activities, and apply simple models to some of the biggest questions in ocean science. Through practical application they will utilize math, graphing, and the scientific method in the marine biology field.

Students will have the option to explore their own topic of interest by designing an observational research project, developing a laboratory experiment, or analyzing existing datasets to answer marine life questions. They will take home the results of this project, a deeper insight into the marine universe, and a stronger understanding of applied math and science skills.
