Most of my childhood memories involve perching high up in the branches of a good climbing tree and devouring one story after another, a greasy slice of pizza smearing the pages as I read. Ever the encouraging elementary school teacher, my mom made sure I understood from day one just how cool reading is! When I was little, I especially loved Nancy Drew.
My bookworm tendencies eventually led me to Mills College, where I majored in history and worked at the campus library. I served as class treasurer for two years, studied abroad at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, and graduated with departmental honors and the outstanding senior award.
I did some volunteer peer tutoring in college and high school, but it wasn’t until after graduation that I began to develop my career as a professional tutor. I knew right away that I enjoyed working with students to help them realize their goals and achieve the scores they deserve.
Since then, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to work with incredibly interesting and diverse students who have taught me at least as much as I have taught them. It is deeply satisfying to be present when the light bulb switches on and a student finally understands an elusive grammatical concept or tough math process.
I love working with students who aim to excel on standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT because I understand how easy it is to develop test anxiety and to fall for traps. I also enjoy working with English and writing students to develop abstract thinking skills, craft a cohesive and persuasive argument, and explore their creativity. Helping my students feel more confident and prepared than ever is rewarding for everyone involved! Most of all, however, I love working with students on their Spanish studies and helping them gain confidence interacting with the language that is such an integral part of our communities!
When I’m not tutoring, I read (surprise!) or listen to audiobooks on my long commutes, practice ukulele, draw and write, and immerse myself in all manners of geeky subcultures. I also love visiting my family and playing with my kitties, Padfoot and Minerva.
