Decker Paulmeier

Academic Tutor and College Counselor

Biography

After graduating from Stanford with a degree in Philosophy, I discovered that my real passion was helping students develop the skills and confidence I wish I’d had earlier in my own academic journey. As the first person from my South Carolina hometown to attend Stanford, I learned firsthand that success isn’t just about memorizing content—it’s about mastering how to learn, think critically, and advocate for yourself in the classroom and beyond.

At Stanford, I served as an oral communication tutor at the Hume Center for Writing and Speaking, where I worked with students on everything from crafting compelling essays to delivering effective presentations. I also taught as a course assistant for seminars on social entrepreneurship and the energy economy, and worked as a peer advisor with Matriculate, helping first-generation students navigate the college admissions process. Through my college counseling and tutoring practice, I’ve had the privilege of helping students gain admission to Stanford, Harvard, and top UC schools—but what matters most to me is watching students discover they’re capable of more than they realized.

My approach to tutoring AP US History, World History, and English goes beyond helping students earn a good grade or test score. I focus on teaching the underlying skills that make students successful: how to analyze primary sources critically, how to construct and defend an argument, how to manage complex reading loads, and how to study efficiently rather than just harder. These are the skills that transformed me from a hardworking student into a confident learner, and they’re the skills that will serve students throughout college and their careers. I aim to make each session both challenging and supportive—pushing students to think deeper while building their confidence that they can handle rigorous coursework.

When I’m not tutoring, I’m usually coaching lacrosse (I was captain of Stanford Men’s Lacrosse), reading philosophy, or working at my family’s BBQ restaurant that’s been featured on the Food Network. I’m currently completing a Post Graduate Certificate in college and career counseling at UC Berkeley, and I’ll be moving back to the Stanford area this year. I’m excited to bring everything I’ve learned—from the classroom, the field, and fifteen years in the service industry—to help your student thrive!

Happy Parents and Students
