Biography

My teaching philosophy centers on three core values: confidence, curiosity, and autonomy. As an instructor, my goal is not simply to help students learn content, but to empower them to develop their own passion for learning through strong academic skills. I want each student to develop the ability to engage critically with new material, connect it to a broader context, and clearly explain their thinking and the observations that support their conclusions.

I received my Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where I spent more than five years as a graduate teaching assistant and research mentor. In these roles, I provided instruction and guidance for college-level courses and mentored undergraduate students on research projects. At UCSC, I primarily specialized in academic writing, scientific reasoning, and experimental design, execution, and statistical analysis.

Before my time at UCSC, I spent three years as a middle school English and writing tutor. I especially enjoyed helping students find their voice and develop confidence in constructing argumentative essays. These experiences reinforced for me the importance of giving students the tools to think critically, communicate clearly, and take ownership of their learning.

At AJ Tutoring, I work with K–8 students to develop essential reading, writing, and math skills that will support them throughout their academic careers. I also work with high school students on AP Statistics, where I prioritize a practical approach that encourages students to make direct connections between statistical concepts and real-world applications. Across all of my work, I aim to help students become more confident, curious, and independent learners.
