Biography

After growing up in Minnesota, I’m now in my fifth year of living in the Bay Area. A graduate of Oberlin College, I then went on to earn a master’s degree in education from the University of Minnesota, eventually moving into the classroom at Skyline High School in Oakland. Teaching has allowed me to work with students from diverse backgrounds and has deepened my belief that every student can become a confident, capable learner with the right support.

Before joining AJ Tutoring, I spent four years teaching AP U.S. History and Ethnic Studies in the Oakland Unified School District. I especially enjoyed helping students develop the skills to read critically, organize complex information, build strong arguments, and become more confident learners. I’m excited to bring that experience to my work tutoring K–8 study skills and U.S. history.

I believe great tutoring starts with getting to know each student as an individual. Students learn best when they feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, so I hope to create a comfortable environment while encouraging students to challenge themselves. Whether we’re studying for a history test or developing more effective study habits, I enjoy helping students find strategies that work for them. One of my favorite parts of teaching has always been seeing a student go from saying, “I can’t do this!” to “I know how to do this.”

When I’m not tutoring, I enjoy reading, practicing yoga, going for walks, and exploring new coffee shops around the East Bay. And if I’m not getting the opportunity to travel, I’m usually at home with my 1-year-old cat!

Happy Parents and Students

""She helped me review DD material that I should have mastered and told me every tutoring session to have confidence in myself. I feel very prepared about taking my placement exams for high school because of him.""
