Tyler VanValkenburg

Biography

I love learning and am dedicated to helping students truly understand what they are studying. I think many students struggle with math not because they lack ability, but because it’s presented as a cryptic set of rules to be memorized. Instead, I aim to help students see that math is a universal language that can be understood intuitively and applied with confidence.

I have a lot of experience breaking down complicated subjects clearly and patiently across different educational levels. After graduating from Harvard with a BA in Computer Science, I worked for several years in tech as a Solutions Engineer where I translated technical ideas into explanations that could be easily grasped. I eventually decided to pivot to tutoring so that I could apply those skills in a more meaningful and impactful way.

Before joining AJ Tutoring, I worked as a tutor in Orange County supporting students across a range of early high school subjects. That experience taught me how much value I could bring to my community as a tutor and how invested I am in helping students achieve success. After moving back to the Bay Area, I joined AJ so that I could continue to enrich students’ academic lives and support their intellectual curiosity.

When I’m not tutoring, you can find me bouldering, going to the movies, solving word puzzles, and traveling to new cities where I get to learn a little more about the world.
