Course Description:

This 1-on-1 creative writing tutoring class is targeted towards motivated elementary and middle school students who are interested in fiction writing and want to develop their skills in developing characters, settings, and conflicts. Students will learn or review classic story arc structure while developing a deeper understanding of the components that make for a compelling short story. While we encourage students to begin the class with ideas for topics they’d like to write about, their personal tutor will guide them through the brainstorming, writing, and revising process. Students will also develop fluency in descriptive writing and in the use of literary techniques ranging from point of view, to dialogue and narration, to figurative language.

Assignments for the class include both writing tasks and reading assorted short stories. These readings will serve as models and inspiration for students’ own projects. By the end of the class, students will have completed and polished one or more short stories.
