Animation 101

Ever wanted to bring your drawings to life? Learn set design, walk cycles, movement, and the fundamentals of animation using open-source software!

Goals:

  • Learn basic functions of OpenToonz, an open-source animation software
  • Learn how to design backgrounds by layering
  • Learn how to construct characters and basic movements (e.g. walk cycles, jumps, flight path, etc.)
  • Learn how to use open-source audio software and sound effect resources

Course Description:

In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of animation, including designing background and character, engineering movement, creating audio, syncing mouth movements to audio, and publishing the final work. This course is great for students who enjoy drawing and feel compelled to get their artwork to “jump off the page.” Students in this course will use OpenToonz, an open-source animation software which can be downloaded for PC and Mac.
