AJ Tutoring covers elementary math through algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, statistics, linear algebra, and other advanced math courses.

Academic tutoring for students who need to catch up, keep up, or get ahead

Academic tutoring is not just for students who are struggling.

Study skills are part of academic tutoring

Knowing the material is only one part of doing well in school.

AJ Tutoring incorporates study skills into academic tutoring when they will help the student succeed. Depending on the student, that can include organization, time management, planning, note-taking, test preparation, memorization, reading strategies, and breaking large assignments into manageable steps.

Most importantly, these skills are taught in the context of the student’s real coursework: planning a week around an actual chemistry test, improving note-taking using a history class, or breaking down a long-term English paper.

Students who need more intensive support with organization, executive functioning, and study habits can also work with AJ Tutoring through dedicated study-skills tutoring.

Can students receive academic tutoring and test preparation at the same time?

Yes. Many AJ Tutoring students receive academic tutoring and standardized-test preparation in parallel.

Academic tutoring generally continues at a regular weekly time and focuses on the student’s school courses, grades, assignments, and academic skills. Focused SAT or ACT preparation is typically added during the months leading up to a student’s test date and follows its own preparation plan and practice-test cycle.

In many cases, an academic tutor is also trained in SAT or ACT preparation and can support the student in both areas; in other cases, the student works with a separate tutor for each.

The programs can work together, but AJ Tutoring does not treat standardized-test preparation as simply another part of the weekly academic tutoring session.

What about AP courses and AP exam preparation?

AJ Tutoring provides academic tutoring for AP courses throughout the school year. A tutor can help a student understand challenging course material, prepare for classroom tests, complete assignments, and stay on top of the pace of an AP class.

As the May AP exam approaches, students may also benefit from dedicated AP exam preparation focused specifically on cumulative review, AP-style questions, exam strategy, and practice tests.

For some students, the same tutor can provide both course support and AP exam preparation. The amount and timing of AP exam prep depends on the student and the course.

How AJ Tutoring helps students build organization and time-management skills

Organization and time management are often closely connected to academic performance.

Rather than teaching these skills only in the abstract, AJ Tutoring’s tutors help students apply them to what is happening in school right now. That might mean organizing assignments, using a planner or Google Calendar, breaking a project into smaller deadlines, planning ahead for several tests in the same week, or developing a more effective study routine.

The goal is not simply to organize a student’s binder or calendar for them. It is to help students develop systems they can increasingly manage on their own.

Consistency matters in academic tutoring

Academic tutoring is most effective when it becomes part of a student’s regular routine rather than an emergency response when something goes wrong.

Consistent weekly sessions give tutors time to understand the course, anticipate upcoming challenges, reinforce concepts before gaps grow, and help students prepare ahead for tests and larger assignments.

When a student is caught up, the tutoring session is still useful. Tutors can preview upcoming material, strengthen weak areas, work on study skills, prepare for longer-term assignments, or introduce enrichment rather than waiting for the next problem to appear.

Why Bay Area families choose AJ Tutoring

AJ Tutoring has worked with tens of thousands of students over more than 20 years. Academic tutoring is one-on-one, personalized, and built around consistent relationships between students and tutors.

Tutors know the subjects they teach, but just as importantly, they get to know their students: where students struggle, how they approach school, when they need encouragement, and when they need to be pushed.

Families can choose in-person tutoring at AJ Tutoring centers throughout the Bay Area or online tutoring when that is the better fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is academic tutoring?

AJ Tutoring’s academic tutoring provides one-on-one support in a student’s school subjects while also helping the student build the skills needed to succeed more independently. Sessions can include concept instruction, homework and assignment support, test preparation for the student’s course, study skills, organization, and planning.

What is the difference between academic tutoring and homework help?

Homework help focuses primarily on completing the assignment in front of the student. AJ Tutoring’s academic tutoring uses current schoolwork as one part of a broader goal: helping students understand the material, improve performance in the course, develop stronger study habits, and become more independent learners.

How often should students meet with an academic tutor?

AJ Tutoring generally recommends consistent weekly tutoring rather than scheduling only when a student is struggling or has an upcoming test. The exact schedule depends on the student’s age, course load, goals, and level of support needed.

Does academic tutoring include study skills?

Yes. AJ Tutoring incorporates study skills into academic tutoring when they are relevant to the student’s needs. Tutors may work on organization, time management, note-taking, test preparation, planning, and other academic habits using the student’s actual coursework. Students who need more intensive support can also receive dedicated study-skills tutoring.

Can academic tutoring help students who are already getting good grades?

Yes. AJ Tutoring works with students at every skill level. Students who are already doing well can use tutoring to deepen their understanding, preview upcoming material, prepare for more advanced coursework, strengthen weak areas, or pursue academic enrichment rather than repeating material they already know.

Can AJ Tutoring support AP classes?

Yes. AJ Tutoring provides academic support for many AP courses throughout the school year. Students can also receive more focused AP exam preparation as the May exams approach.

Can students do academic tutoring and SAT or ACT prep at the same time?

Yes. AJ Tutoring often provides academic tutoring and test preparation in parallel. Academic tutoring continues to focus on school coursework and grades, while SAT or ACT preparation follows a separate plan tied to the student’s test date. Depending on the student and tutor, the same tutor may provide both services or the student may work with separate tutors.

Do you offer academic tutoring online?

Yes. AJ Tutoring offers both online and in-person academic tutoring. In-person tutoring is available at AJ Tutoring centers throughout the Bay Area, while online tutoring provides additional flexibility for students based on schedule and location.

What subjects does AJ Tutoring offer?

AJ Tutoring provides one-on-one tutoring in math, science, English and writing, history and social studies, foreign languages, study skills, and many advanced, AP, and college-level courses. Availability varies by subject, level, and location.
