Career Communications for High School Students

For students with a summer job at a local tech company, doctor’s office, or school, using Snapchat or iMessaging at 2:00am isn’t likely to be their boss’s preferred method of communication. In this short enrichment course, students will learn to communicate professionally using methods such as email, phone, and in-person conversations in the work they are currently doing in their summer jobs, while setting themselves up for the next successful step in their future careers.

Cost: $150/hr

Recommended hours: 6-9

Goals:

  • clarify priorities in their current job and the key skills they’ll need to develop for their careers
  • write emails, plan phone calls, and initiate conversations to excel at the responsibilities in their current role
  • prepare slides, create reports, and practice presentations for upcoming meetings

Course Description:

In this specialized course, students will learn to communicate professionally in their summer jobs using methods such as email, phone, and in-person conversations. After identifying priorities in their summer job, they’ll outline a brief vision for the summer and their future careers. Then, during weekly tutoring sessions, as they tackle new challenges in their job, students will discuss recent accomplishments, challenges, and action plans for success in the upcoming week. Communication methods taught include speaking on the phone, writing emails, preparing slides, giving presentations, planning events, coordinating meetings, and practicing conversations with colleagues, in order to set themselves up for success in their future careers.
