Course Description:

Evidence and its corresponding analysis are the heart of any essay. Picking the wrong quotes can leave students floundering as they are constantly met with the critique “More analysis!”. And while many classes spend time teaching the 5-paragraph essay and how to write a topic sentence, significantly less time is spent addressing how to find and analyze the most essential components of an essay.

Through this course, students will read a variety of genres in the form of short stories, poetry, novellas and even song lyrics. In moving through such a varied catalogue of pieces, students will build confidence in selecting evidence, regardless of prompt, genre or source. They’ll learn how to analyze selected quotes, expanding on relevance and meaning while also connecting back to the work as a whole. And by selecting lesser-known source material of literary merit, students get to have a little fun while still increasing their scholastic aptitude.

All students entering or continuing high school next year are welcome, regardless of skill level.
