The Meaning of Tragedy

Ever wondered where the ideas of the ‘tragic flaw’ and the ‘tragic hero’ came from? Have trouble distinguishing between pathos and catharsis? Or just wonder what tragedy really means? Explore the ideas of great minds throughout the centuries on the subject, read the most compelling tragedies ever written, and decide for yourself!

Goals:

  • Read and discuss tragedies by playwrights such as Sophocles and Shakespeare
  • Follow the evolving idea of tragedy through Western thought
  • Write a culminating essay on what truly defines a tragedy

Course Description:

Students will analyze and discuss the thoughts and plays of authors including Sophocles, Aristotle and Shakespeare. They’ll engage with various understandings of what tragedy has meant to mankind, and examine what it means to them. Each student will then formulate a thesis and write an essay on the essence of tragedy and how it affects us.
