Our balanced approach gives you an admissions advantage.

Measurable Results.

We are devoted to making measurable differences in your college prospects, starting at the beginning of your high school career.

The Relative Importance of the SAT.

We estimate that a student’s chances for admission to a college depend on high school courses and grades (60%), SAT and other standardized test scores (30%), and essays, recommendations, and extracurricular activities (10%).

Short-Term SAT Test Prep, Academics for Life.

Because grades are about twice as important as SAT scores, we do not advocate long-term preparation for the SAT and instead encourage our freshmen and sophomores to focus on academic excellence. This is the only true long-term strategy for improving SAT scores, and AJ Tutoring has an outstanding team of professional tutors to help students achieve their full potential in academic subjects.

PSAT, SAT, and SAT Subject Test frequently asked questions (FAQs)

How long is the SAT, and what does it test?

The SAT is a 3 hour and 50 minute test. It has two sections, Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and the score for each section is reported on a scale from 200 to 800. A perfect score is 1600.

The Math section tests your skills in arithmetic, algebra, algebra II, and geometry, as well as your ability to carefully break down and understand complex questions.

The Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section tests your reading comprehension and ability to find and fix errors in passages that are written especially for the exam.

What is the PSAT?

The PSAT is a practice SAT offered to sophomores and juniors in October. It is slightly shorter than the SAT and does not have the essay. Thus, your PSAT score is usually a good indicator of your future SAT performance. PSAT scores become available online in December or January.

At AJ Tutoring, we believe that students should take advantage of the PSAT as a unique chance to practice in conditions that simulate the actual SAT. With this goal in mind, we recommend meeting with one of our tutors for three 90-minute sessions to prepare for the PSAT. Although not a comprehensive course, the three sessions allow us to impart to you the most critical test-taking skills and strategies and to address your biggest weak spot. You can then approach the PSAT with a customized game plan. Students who take the PSAT seriously often feel more confident when they take their first SAT.

Can my student take SAT subject tests?

As of January 2021, the College Board has discontinued the SAT subject test program. Students will still need to distinguish themselves in academics for their college applications and showcase their academic interests. We recommend that students enroll in AP classes at their schools when possible and take the AP exams offered each spring.

AJ Tutoring offers academic tutoring throughout the year to support students in AP classes, as well as AP exam prep targeted specifically toward those tests and the unique challenges they pose (multiple choice questions, essay and DBQ writing, multi-part problems).
