Let’s Read!

Getting a student reading is one of the greatest things that we can do for them! Reading broadens their vocabulary, creative writing skills, content knowledge and more. It can be challenging choosing the right books to get kids started, especially those who are resistant to reading! The American Library Association has put together several helpful lists to get students started on the right path this summer (see full list here). Additionally, our AJ team has also put together some of their favorites as well.

Elementary/Middle School Book Recommendations

Ella Enchanted, Inkheart, The Giving Tree, Madeline -AJ Staff Member

Authors I went back to multiple times include Louis Sachar, Roald Dahl, Bruce Coville, and Laura Ingalls Wilder -Jessica Embrey

The Golden Compass series, Nancy Drew books, Artemis Fowl -Peggy Taylor

Middle/High School Book Recommendations

I recommend anything fiction! There’s a lot of push to read non-fiction and informational texts these days, but there’s so much to be gained by reading and analyzing a great work of fiction. Some of my favorites when I was in school include A Wrinkle in Time, Pride and Prejudice, and Wuthering Heights.” -Jessica Embrey

Lord of the Rings, Over Sea Under Stone, Anything by Terry Pratchett (Guards! Guards! and Wyrd Sisters are particular favorites) -Katie Quach Noice

The Gossip Girl books, YA novels, etc. -Peggy Taylor

Make the Most of the Library!

While encouraging students to read can often feel like a continual reminder, summer is the perfect time to start. Librarians are excellent resources for motivating your student and provide expertise on what type of books can best fit their interests. They make great personalized recommendations for students based on interest, grade level, and comprehension level. The library also hosts summer reading programs and activities for more engaging ways to spark reading excitement.
